52 Senators Choose Voter Suppression and Billionaire Donors Over the American People’s Right to Vote
“Manchin and Sinema joined 50 Republican Senators in siding with billionaire donors and voter suppression by blocking reform.”
Washington, DC – Last night, Democratic Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin joined 50 Republican Senators in siding with billionaire donors and voter suppression efforts across the country over protecting the freedom to vote, when they blocked changes to the racist filibuster that would have made it possible to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act on a majority vote.
“Senate Republicans once again made it clear that they stand with toxic billionaire donors and dark money interests over regular voters,” said Chris Tallent, National Campaign Director for HAZMAT America, “and instead of seizing a historic opportunity to protect the freedom to vote for everyone, Democratic Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin shamefully sided with Mitch McConnell and Republican voter suppression efforts across the country. It’s no coincidence they’re raking in cash from billionaire GOP donors who benefit from the rigged status quo.”
“Just days after reports of exploding billionaire wealth during the pandemic, and immediately following the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday honoring the Civil Rights leader’s legacy – these Senators made clear where they stand – at the side of the rich and powerful, against regular voters.”
“In our country’s history, regular people have fought tooth and nail to win equal rights – and this situation is no different. Now we know who we have to defeat and hold accountable in the days and months to come.”
“We will relentlessly call out the corruption of Senators who oppose voting rights for everyone, and take action to make sure they are held accountable,” said Tallent.
